Celebrate Tanabata at Yama: Share Your Wish With Our Community 🎋✨

Every summer, people across Japan celebrate one of the country's most beloved traditions: Tanabata, also known as the Star Festival. Rooted in a centuries-old legend, Tanabata is a time to reflect on hopes, dreams, and wishes for the future while coming together as a community.

This year, we're excited to bring that tradition to Yama Sushi Marketplace and invite you to be part of it.

What Is Tanabata?

Tanabata is celebrated annually on July 7 and tells the story of two celestial lovers, Orihime (the Weaver Star) and Hikoboshi (the Cowherd Star), who are separated by the Milky Way and allowed to reunite just once a year.

To honor their reunion, people write their wishes on colorful strips of paper called tanzaku and hang them on bamboo branches. These wishes can be about anything from personal goals and good health to success, happiness, love, or simply hoping for brighter days ahead.

Over time, Tanabata has become more than just a holiday. It's a celebration of optimism, gratitude, and believing in the possibilities that lie ahead. This year, Yama will celebrate Tanabata season throughout the month of July and August.

Why We're Celebrating at Yama

For more than 40 years, Yama has been committed to being more than just a place to pick up sushi. We've always hoped to create a space where people can experience and connect with Japanese culture in meaningful ways.

Whether it's introducing customers to seasonal traditions, celebrating Japanese holidays, or sharing unique products from Japan, our goal has always been to create moments that bring our community together as a window to Japan and a door to the USA.

Tanabata is a beautiful reminder that everyone has dreams worth sharing, and we wanted to create an opportunity for our customers to celebrate that tradition together.

Outside each of our store locations, customers are invited to take part in a beloved Japanese tradition by writing down their hopes, dreams, or wishes on colorful tanzaku (wish cards) and hanging them on our bamboo display. Throughout the celebration, the bamboo trees become filled with heartfelt messages from our community, creating a beautiful and meaningful display that brings people together while honoring the spirit of Tanabata.

Write Your Wish at Yama

We invite you to stop by any Yama Sushi Marketplace location and write your wish on one of our wish cards.

Whether you're wishing for:

  • A new beginning

  • Good health for loved ones

  • Career or academic success

  • Safe travels

  • Happiness and peace

  • Or simply more sushi in your life 🍣

We'd love for you to add your wish to our growing community display. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

As more wishes fill our stores, each card becomes a reminder that behind every visit is a unique story, dream, or goal. Together, they create a beautiful display of hope and community.

Be Part of the Tradition

Tanabata reminds us that even the smallest wish has meaning. By sharing our hopes with one another, we celebrate not only individual dreams but the connections that bring communities together.

The next time you visit Yama, take a moment to slow down, write your wish, and add it to our Tanabata display. You may even find inspiration from the wishes left by fellow Yama customers.

We can't wait to read what you're wishing for this year.

From everyone at Yama, thank you for allowing us to continue sharing Japanese traditions with our community with one wish, one meal, and one memorable experience at a time.

Visit your nearest Yama Sushi Marketplace, write your Tanabata wish card, and help us fill our stores with hopes for the year ahead 🎋
